Scór Quiz 2019

As you will be aware from convention, the Scór Quiz will be taking place in Navan O Mahony’s clubhouse on Saturday 19th January. 

An information leaflet is attached above with all of the details.

The under 17 (Scór na nÓg) quiz competition will begin at 6pm and this will be followed by the over 17 (Scór Sinsir) quiz competition at 8pm. 

Teams are made up of 4 club members and they must be fully registered with the club in question

The entry fee is €20 if you have not been involved in Scór to date this year.

Rounds are as follows:

1) Gaelic and Ladies Football 2) Hurling and Camogie 3) General GAA Round 4) Irish History 5) World History and World Geography 6) Irish Geography 7) Irish Current Affairs 8) World Current Affairs 9) Irish Culture 10) General knowledge.

We are hoping to up our participation levels this year so if your club is interested please fill out the quiz registration form above by Wednesday 16th January and send it into myself at irishculturalofficer.meath@gaa.ie or meathculturalsecretary@gmail.com

These must be signed by the club secretary ensuring that all details within the form are correct. 

Scór Sinsir 2019

Following on from All-Ireland success last year, Scór Sinsir will take place on Thursday 14th February 2019 at 7:30pm. 

Venue Gibbstown Hall. 

Competitors must be over the age of 17.

We invite all clubs to place entries in any of the following disciplines:

1) Céilí Dancing 2) Solo Singing 3) Recitation/Story Telling 4) Ballad Group 5) Stage Presentation 6) Musical instruments 7) Set Dancing.

I have attached the Scór Rule book and the Scór Hand Book which explains each of these disciplines in greater detail and gives examples of songs/recitations/dances etc within it.

The cost for the club to take part is €20 if the club has not taken part in any Scór competitions within the county this year.

I attach an entry and registration form for completion should your club wish to take part

Leinster Scór na nÓg Leinster Semi Final 

On Saturday 8th December 2018, all eyes will be on Oldcastle GFC and Meath GAA as they host the Leinster Semi-Final of Scór na nÓg in Oldcastle Show Hall at 2pm. It is a huge honour with Scór in its 50th year for our county to host the event following on from All-Ireland success in the discipline of recitation at Scór Sinsir earlier in 2018.

Representatives from Meath, Westmeath, Louth, Longford and Offaly will be present on the day hoping for a place in the Leinster Final which will be held in The Wexford Opera House on Sunday 13th January.

Meath will be represented in each of the seven disciplines thanks to the hard work of our clubs throughout the county. We encourage club members from all across Meath to travel to Oldcastle on Saturday to support our clubs and county. Doors will be open from 1:15pm. An Mhí Abú ??

Beidh Scór Sinsir a reachtáil ar an Aoine 9ú lá d’Fheabhra 2018 i Halla Baile Ghibb, ag a leath uair tar éis a seacht a clog pm.

Scór Sinsir will take place on Friday 9th February 2018 in Gibbstown Hall at 7.30pm.

Scór Sinsir will follow the same format as the Scór na nÓg competition which was held in

November. We would appreciate if your club could participate in at least one of the following

events:

1. Ceili dancing
2. Solo singing
3. Recitation
4. Ballad Group
5. Novelty Act
6. Musical Instrumental Group
7. Set

1. Final of Scór na nÓg :- The Co. Final of Scór na nÓg, the GAA’s talent competition for young people under 17, takes place on Saturday 5th December at 7pm sharp in Donaghmore/Ashbourne GAA Club.

3. General Rules :-
   • Competitors must be under 17 years of age on 1st January 2015 and must be registered GAA members.
   • A club may only have one entry per event.
   • A team in a group event may only comprise of members from one club.
   • There is no requirement to have acts in any event in the Irish language.
   • ENTRY FEE:- There is an Entry Fee of €20 per club (regardless of the number of events being competed in) and this should be brought along on the night of the Co. Final. This will cover participation in the Table Quiz which will be held in early 2015.

8. Getting Entries from YOUR club :- Since Scór comprises seven separate events covering music, song, dancing, drama and comedy, and a club only needs an entry in just one of the events, there is no reason why every club in Meath should not have an entry. The young people who can dance, sing, play music and act are in your parish and community. Your club needs to contact them and get them to participate. The one key step required to achieve that is to get somebody in the club or the local community who has an interest in Irish music, song, dance etc. to be the Scór Co-Ordinator (your club’s Irish Officer is an obvious option but may not be the best option or even want to in all cases). Make sure that contact is made with local schools, ideally through a teacher who is also involved in your club.

Select a Scór Co-Ordinator immediately therefore, give them the necessary information and that should go a long way to ensuring an entry for your club in Scór na nÓg.

Scór is a fantastic competition and a wonderful outlet for the talents of young people. It is OUR competition in the GAA and it is clubs who must promote and support it. So get those talented young people in your parish performing on stage and representing your club on 5th December.

Change of Date for Senior Scór Table Quiz Final

Please note that, due to the unavailability of the Quizmaster, the Co. Final of the Table Quiz for Senior Scór is POSTPONED tomorrow night 13th March until Saturday 21st March in same venue, Walterstown GAA Club, at 8.30 pm. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

1. Final of Senior Scór :- The Co. Final of Senior Scór, the GAA’s talent competition for people over 17 on 1st January 2015, takes place on Sunday 22nd Februaru at 7.00pm sharp in O’Mahonys GAA Club.
2. Leinster Semi-Final :- The winners from the Co. Final will represent Meath in the Leinster Semi-Final on Sunday 8th March at 3.00 pm in The Downs GAA Club, Co. Westmeath.
3. General Rules :-
   • Competitors must be over 17 years of age on 1st January 2015 and must be registered GAA members.
   • A club may only have one entry per event apart from the Table Quiz..
   • A team in a group event may only comprise of members from one club.
   • There is no requirement to have acts in any event in the Irish language.
   • ENTRY FEE:- There is an Entry Fee of €20 per club (regardless of the number of events being competed in) and this should be brought along on the night of the Co. Final. This will also cover participation in the Table Quiz which will be held in March.
4. Events in Senior Scór :-
5. Solo Singing – self accompaniment only is allowed but not on piano or keyboard
   • Instrumental Music – a group of 2-5 to play three traditional tunes, one of chosen character and the second and third played without a break and of the same character. but different to that of the first tune)
   • Recitation – six minutes maximum
   • Ballad Group – a group of 3-5 people must sing two songs of Irish character, the tempo of the two songs must be contrasting and music accompaniment is allowed, a maximum of three are allowed and electrified or battery operated instruments are also allowed but a piano is not allowed, and all accompaniment must come from within the group
   • Figure Dancing – group of 4, 6 or 8 perform a complete figure dance or ceilí dance.
   • Set Dancing – Group of 4 or 8 dance two parts of a set and
   • Léiriú Stairiuil (Historical Presentation) – a group event for a minimum of three and a maximum of eight people who must depict an event or events from The History of Ireland up to the present day or the Mythology of Ireland. Each contribution shall take a maximum of ten minutes including setting up and clearing the stage. Props are confined to hand held props.
   • Clubs may compete in anything from just one of those seven events up to all seven.

10. Final of Senior Scór Table Quiz – This will take place at 8.30 pm in Walterstown GAA Club on Friday 13th March. There are 10 rounds of eight questions as follows :- Hurling and Camogie, Ladies Football and Gaelic Football, General GAA Round, Irish Current Affairs, World Current Affairs, World History and World Geography, Irish Geography, Irish Culture and General Knowledge. One question in each round will be in Irish and must be answered in Irish.

There is an Entry Fee of €20 per club but clubs who take part in the main Scór competition are exempt from the Quiz Entry Fee.
The winners of the Co. Final will go forward directly to the All Ireland Final in City West Hotel in Dublin at 11.30am on Saturday 26th April.

1. Final of Scór na nÓg :- The Co. Final of Scór na nÓg, the GAA’s talent competition for young people under 17, takes place on Sunday 23rd November at 3.30pm sharp in Walterstown GAA Club.
2. Leinster Semi-Final :- The winners from the Co. Final will represent Meath in the Leinster Semi-Final on Sunday 14th December at 2.00 pm in Parnells GAA Club, Coolock Village, Dublin. The Leinster Final is on Sunday 11th January at 3.00 pm in St. Brigids GAA Club, Navan Road, Dublin.
3. General Rules :-
   • Competitors must be under 17 years of age on 1st January 2015 and must be registered GAA members.
   • A club may only have one entry per event.
   • A team in a group event may only comprise of members from one club.
   • There is no requirement to have acts in any event in the Irish language.
   • ENTRY FEE:- There is an Entry Fee of €20 per club (regardless of the number of events being competed in) and this should be brought along on the night of the Co. Final. This will cover participation in the Table Quiz which will be held in early 2015.
4. Changes to Scór :- I have copies of the new Scór Rules and Information booklet and I can post one to any club that requests one. Just to highlight some of the significant changes introduced last year :-

   • The Novelty Act competition has been replaced by a new competition called Leiriu (the nearest English equivalent would be Depiction or Representation). Basically it is a 12 minute (max) drama (including time for setting-up and removal of props) depicting an event or events from the history or mythology of Ireland. It can include comedy, live music, singing and dance. It is for a group of at least 3 and a max of 8 people. As regards props only hand held props (a hand held prop is defined as an object carried on stage by hand by a performer) are allowed.
   • The Quiz is gone and has been replaced by a Table Quiz which although part of Scór will be held on a separate date at both county and All Ireland Final level.
   • The “Dance On” and “Dance Off” in Figure / Ceili Dancing and Set Dancing are limited to a max of 16 bars of music in each case. The penalty for breaching that rule is 10 marks in each case.
   • Solo Singing:- Accompaniment can only be by the competitor themselves. Piano or keyboard not allowed. The song can only be of a maximum six minutes duration.
   • Instrumental Music:- The only electrified instrument, mains or battery operated, that is allowed is a battery-operated keyboard which can only be used in piano mode.
   • Schools of dancing costumes are not allowed, while the wearing of dancing wigs is also forbidden. A breach of either of those rules will incur disqualification.

1. The Co. Final of the Senior Scór Table Quiz :- The Co. Final of the Senior Scór Table Quiz takes place on Friday 4th April at 8pm in Walterstown GAA Club. The quiz will comprise 10 rounds of questions (10 questions per round) on specifc topics – Football / Ladies Football (last 20 years), Hurling / Camogie (last 20 years), Irish round (questions and answers as Gaeilge), World History, Irish History, Irish Geography, Irish Current Affairs, World Current Affairs, Irish Culture and General Knowledge. The winners qualify direct for the All Ireland Final in Castlebar on Saturday 26th April at 12 noon. Further details from Richard Harrahill, Chairman, Meath Scór Committee on 046-9025023 or 087-2367941. The intention of clubs to participate should be texted or emailed (richardharrahill@eircom.net) to Richard by Tuesday 1st April.​
2. Co. Final of Scór na nÓg :- Further to the notification of 19th November from Micheál Ó Gallachóir, Oifigeach na Gaeilge, I wish to confirm that the Co. Final of Scór na nÓg, the GAA’s talent competition for young people under 17, takes place on Saturday week, 30th November at 7pm sharp in Walterstown GAA Club.
3. Leinster Semi-Final :- The winners from the Co. Final will represent Meath in the Leinster Semi-Final on Sunday 15th December at 2.00 pm in Parnells GAA Club, Coolock Village, Dublin. The Leinster Final is on Saturday 18th January at 2.30 pm in Erin’s Isle GAA Club, Finglas, Dublin.
4. General Rules :-
   • Competitors must be under 17 years of age on 1st January 2014.
   • A club may only have one entry per event.
   • A team in a group event may only comprise of members from one club.
   • There is no requirement to have acts in any event in the Irish language.
   • ENTRY FEE:- There is an Entry Fee of €20 per club (regardless of the number of events being competed in) and this should be brought along on the night of the Co. Final.
5. Major Changes to Scór :- There are some significant changes to Scór this year. The new rules can be viewed on the Meath GAA web site. Also I have copies of the new Scór Rules and Information booklet and I can post one on to any club that requests one.
   The most significant changes to be aware of are:-
   • A club can participate by having an entry in just one event rather than the previous minimum of two events.
   • The Novelty Act competition has been replaced by a new competition called Leiriu (the nearest English equivalent would be Depiction or Representation). The Scór na nÓg county final will take place Saturday 30th November at 7pm in Walterstown GAA clubrooms.
A list of rules are up on the county website. Competitors must be U17 and a member of the GAA to take part.

Please note that the 2013 AGM of Coiste Scór na Mí plus a meeting to discuss and set the date for the Co. Final of Scór na nÓg (Junior Scór – under 17 on 1st January 2014) in late November / early December will be held in Áras Tailteann, Páirc Tailteann on next Friday night, 8th November, at 8.00 pm sharp. Every club should be represented at this meeting.
The composition and rules for Scór have changed for the 2014 competitionsso it is important that your club’s Irish Officer, or a substitute, should attend next Friday night’s meeting as we will be giving clubs information on the revised Scór, advice on how best to get entries and discussing ways in which we can get a good level of participation from as many clubs as possible in the Co. Final of Scór na nÓg. The new Scór Rules and Information Booklet will be available at the meeting also.
We will be finalising the date and venue for the Scór na nÓg Final in late November / early December.

The GAA’s ‘SCÓR’ Competition
is Waiting for YOU

Can you do some or any of the following :-

• Sing (solo or part of a group)
• Do Figure Dancing or Set Dancing(group)
• Do a Recitation
• Play Irish Music (as part of a group)
• Act (as part of a group)
• Quiz (as part of a team)

If you would like to perform in any of the above then SENIOR SCÓR the GAA’s Talent Competition for over 17s (on 1/1/13) IS FOR YOU

Meath Co. Final in Skryne on
Sunday 3rd March at 7pm
SCÓR comprises eight separate competitions :-

• Figure Dancing (group of 4 or 8).
• Solo Singing (accompaniment allowed) – one song.
• Instrumental Music (group of 2-5) – two tunes.
• Novelty Act (group of 2-8) – a sketch/ pageant.
• Team Quiz (individual answers  are written).
• Set Dancing (group of 4 or 8) – two parts.
• Recitation (solo performers) – serious or funny.
• Ballad Group (group of 3-5) – two songs.

While songs, sketches and music have to be of Irish character
there is no need for any knowledge of or performance in the Irish language in any of the eight events.

The winners in each section in the Co. Final
will participate in the Leinster Semi-Final on Sunday 10th March in Clonaslee, Co. Laois at 5.00 pm.
